High-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology is opening up new possibilities in energy and power applications. As the industry develops, specialist manufacturing equipment and engineering expertise are becoming increasingly important in bringing these technologies to market.

We recently marked the handover of a new HTS magnet winding machine from our subsidiary, Ridgway Machines Ltd. During the handover, Ridgway Managing Director Mike Allen MSc presented the machine to our CEO, Warrick Matthews.

Designed to handle 20 HTS tape feeds, the machine can wind magnet coils in a wide range of shapes. This gives us greater flexibility when working with complex magnet designs and helps meet the technical demands of emerging superconducting applications.

Advanced magnets are essential to many developing technologies, including fusion energy and next-generation electrical systems. However, moving from design to practical use requires manufacturing processes that can deliver consistent results and meet growing production needs.

Ridgway Machines brings specialist winding knowledge and engineering experience to this challenge, helping customers develop the equipment and processes needed to manufacture advanced products.

The new machine also strengthens the connection between Ridgway and our TE Magnetics HTS division, supporting closer collaboration between equipment engineering and superconducting technology development.

By continuing to develop our manufacturing capabilities, we are building a strong foundation to support customers, respond to new industry requirements and help bring the next generation of HTS applications closer to commercial use.
